Personal work

PERSONAL WORK
I love to design things by just using black and white. Shapes and lines are strong design components that if used effectively can yield interesting outcomes. Therefore im always trying to experiment with new silhouette techniques whether by developing new custom brushes, painting techniques, playing with light and shadows or just plain straight forward line work.

Character designs are my favorite. I like to add in a little flair to the characters so as to give them more personality. Making them wear certain clothes or giving them unique quarks helps establish this.

Did i mention that i love reading comics. I have to admit that im a Marvel fanboy, here are some of my takes on those awesome characters.

Apart from characters, i also love to work on some prop and vehicle designs such as guns or mecha, who doesn't love drawing mecha.

I really love watching cartoons. I dont think i will ever stop watching them. Something about creating simple but attracting worlds has always facinated me. Developing a story and characters that will be universally adored is one of the most difficult things to do.
Below is a WIP concept of a story that i came up with a while back.
Its about a young boy and his grandma who live in an enchanted jungle. The Grandma, who is a shaman of some sorts, protects the jungle by maintaining its life source. One day the life source was released and dispersed across the jungle. The life source entered some Tiki statues and brought them to life. Each of these statues have unique characteristics and attributes.
Now its up to our protagonist, who is called Mori, to go and save the jungle by retrieving the life force from these cheeky Tiki statues.
Its still in its early stages, but i would love to take the time to just flesh out the story and polish the characters. Still not satisfied with them.

3D is the next step in concept art. With softwares such as Zbrush and Google Sketchup, concept artists have now strated to take their work from 2D to the the 3D canvas. Not only does it help fine tune the design, it also provides a good building block for the 3D modellers to start modelling the final assets in a production pipeline.
I am currently exploring this avenue, and below is my first Zbrush head sculpt of a humanoid alien. Initially i started this by creating a base mesh in Maya the exported the OBJ file to Zbrush for some sculpting fun.

Animation Series

ANIMATION SERIES
Here are some of my works on animated series. All images belong to Backbone Entertainment.
Cheezles was 2D animation series that i helped with some character and vehicles designs.

I had the awesome opportunity to work on the Dennis the Menace 2D animation pitch. Although short lived, i had an interesting time working on one of my favourite comic characters when i was a child. I also took the opportunity to explore new techniques on executing Background art.

Jinggo the animated series is a project from the popular malaysian magazine Gempak/Starz. We were tasked to develop an adaptation from one of their successfull comics; Jinggo.
Initially the project was to be executed in 2D but it was later decided that a 3D animated series would be much suited.
The following are some of the earlier concepts for the 2D version. Also included was some of the storyboard that i was doing for the opening credits/trailer for the show.
It is sad, that all the designs and concepts were scrapped in the end.

Tales of Kinabalu was another 2D animated series that i had the pleasure to work on. I was responsible for the development of the character designs.

SugarPals is yet another 2D animated series that i worked on. For this series i was generally incharge of the Background art supervision and prop designs. Although i did end up doing a couple incidental character designs.

Here is another concept design i did for a kids musical TV show. I dont remember the name of the show, but i dont really think it every made it into the final project.
